'Telenor sees revenues from Asia exceeding 30%'

(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Norwegian telecommunications operator Telenor expects revenue contribution from Asia to climb steadily surpassing 30 percent as the company moves to launch services in India, Telenor President and CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas told Dow Jones Newswires. The company plans to launch services in India through its joint venture Unitech Wireless later this year. Telenor will have around 12,000 towers in place after the launch and it has signed up with distributors with the aim to reach 300,000 points of sales. Baksaas expects the Indian operation to reach the break-even point three years after the launch and the company is aiming for a market share of about 8 percent. Telenor is also looking at consolidation opportunities in Pakistan. Baksaas declined to comment specifically on whether the company is engaged in talks with an operator. Telenor is in the process of replacing its entire mobile services infrastructure in Norway over the next few years. In early November, the company said it chose Huawei and Starent Networks as the technology providers for the wireless network and mobile core network respectively.
