'Belgacom will not be a prey in Europan consolidation - CEO'Nov 19, 2009 (DMEUROPE via COMTEX) -- European telecommunications consolidation is unavoidable, but Belgacom will not be a prey, the Belgian group's CEO, Didier Belens, told L'Echo newspaper. Bellens expects all European networks to be using IP within 5 or 6 years. It will be easier to work together. There will be giants, such as Vodafone, Telefonica, France Telecom and Deutsche Telecom, who will have to invest in new technologies to face competition from cable operators. Beyond Europe, Bellens said Belgacom was working with the former management of Scarlet on projects in Curacao and North Africa. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan offer other possibilities. He added that Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS) saw its turnover grow by 15.3 percent in the third quarter, and is generating EUR 1 billion per year. BICS comprises Belgacom's carrier services in Africa and the Middle East. Including Tango Luxembourg, international operations account for 25 to 30 percent of group sales.
