China Q3 mobile phone sales at 39 mln sets, Analysys International

SHANGHAI, Nov 19, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China sold 39.07 million mobile phone sets in the domestic market in the third quarter of this year, up 18.2 percent quarter on quarter, according to statistics from Analysys International, the market researcher.

The market's sales of GSM mobile phones in the third quarter amounted to 31.72 million sets, up 4.6 percent.

Wang Liusheng, an analyst from Analysys International, estimates that the growth was driven by two factors. First, many students bought new mobile phones when the new school term started in September. Second, potential mobile phone users, who had suspended their purchasing plans expecting new 3G services, instead adopted GSM products.

Meanwhile, CDMA mobile phones based on the 2.5-generation technology achieved a sales volume of 6.37 million sets, surging 155.1 percent quarter on quarter, thanks to China Telecom's (0728.HK; CHA.NYSE) diversified mobile phone styles and reinforced market promotion, accurately customized for such groups as students and pregnant women.

In the 3G category, phone sales volume recorded at 983,000 sets.

China Mobile (0941.HK; CHL.NYSE), China Unicom (0762.HK; 600050.SH; CHU.NYSE), and China Telecom are all constructing networks, designing services, and charging standards. Some young users and high-end business users have became the first group to adopt 3G mobile phones.

The sales of 3G mobile phones under China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom were respectively 367,000 sets, 324,000 sets, and 292,000 sets.
