Emulex Chosen by Sun to Deliver New ExpressModule HBA

Nov 19, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Emulex, a provider of converged networking solutions for the data center, announced the availability of a new combined 8Gb/s Fibre Channel and 1Gb/s Ethernet ExpressModule Host Bus Adapter (HBA) for the Sun Blade 6000 Modular System.

The company said that the new Emulex multi-protocol ExpressModule HBAs, available from Sun, delivers increased performance, flexibility and enhanced slot utilization for virtualized server and large or mixed storage area network (SAN) and local area network (LAN) environments.

"The extremely scalable, high-performance Sun Blade 6000 Modular System combined with Emulex's ExpressModule HBA provides greater transaction rates and more effective CPU utilization, which is needed to support I/O intensive applications and server virtualization," said Steve Daheb, chief marketing officer and senior vice president of business development, Emulex. "Today's announcement is indicative of our commitment to providing a variety of connectivity solutions that deliver enterprise scalability, extreme flexibility and comprehensive virtualization capabilities and further demonstrates the strength of Emulex's relationship with Sun." Emulex reported that its multi-protocol ExpressModule HBA leverages Sun's modular architecture to provide high-density, hot-pluggable SAN expandability, which eliminates any disruption to ongoing blade activities during installation, reconfiguration and removal. This provides customers with a SAN connectivity solution for leveraging blade servers in virtualized server and large-scale environments. Further, Emulex ExpressModule HBAs are external to each blade server, thus reducing the impact of thermal and power requirements on the blade server.

"Customers are continually seeking increased capacity and processing power, while looking for ways to reduce power, cooling and space requirements. The revolutionary Sun Blade 6000 Modular System combined with the Emulex ExpressModule high-performance, flexible LAN and SAN connectivity solution delivers this and more," said Jason Schaffer, Senior Director of Storage Marketing, Sun Microsystems. "The Sun Blade 6000 family is ideal for consolidating and virtualizing a wide variety of applications from the Web to the back office on blades. We continually look to provide the most advanced enterprise-class solutions for our customers to meet the needs of the evolving data center." Available for use with Sun Blade 6000 systems, Emulex multi-protocol ExpressModule HBAs are compatible with standard Emulex 4Gb/s and 8Gb/s Fibre Channel LightPulse HBAs, which are fully interoperable with Linux, the Solaris Operating System, VMware and Windows platforms. The Emulex combined dual-channel 8Gb/s Fibre Channel and dual-port 1Gb/s Ethernet ExpressModule HBA (Sun model number SG-XPCIEFCGBE-E8-Z) is available through Sun and its authorized resellers.
