National Press Club Wed., Nov. 18, 10:30 a.m. Newsmaker Event to Focus on Double Standard Between European Companies and U.S. Subsidiaries in Treatment of WorkersWASHINGTON --(Business Wire)-- Larry Cohen (News - Alert), president of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), will outline the next step in globalization -- a joint union between CWA and ver.di, the European union at Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert)/TMobile, to represent workers on both sides of the Atlantic -- at a Newsmaker Event at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Broadcast Operations Center on the 4th floor of the National Press Building. The goal of the new TUnion is to overcome the double standard between how European companies treat workers in their home countries and the poor treatment many employees of the same companies experience in the United States. In this new model, CWA (News - Alert) works with U.S.-based telecom workers, and ver.di is responsible for relations with the company in Germany. John Logan, director of labor studies at San Francisco State University will join Cohen. Logan has made an extensive study of the differences in labor conditions between workers employed by European companies in Europe and the way U.S.-based employees of the same companies are treated. A DT worker from Germany and a U.S.-based TMobile worker also will participate. The TMobile worker's appearance will be disguised to protect his identity. |
