China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom Executives Said to Have Talks

BEIJING, Nov 17, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- The board chairman of China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (NYSE: CHU, HKSE: 0762 and SHSE: 600050) and the general manager of Chunghwa Telecom (TPE: 2412 and NYSE: CHT) are said to have talks about roaming fee reduction and joint establishment of iPhone and 3G mobile phone Greater China value-added service platform on November 17, 2009.

Because China Unicom and Chunghwa Telecom both are the telecom carriers that gain exclusive iPhone rights, the two parties intend to join hands on mobile value-added services.

Recently, telecom carriers in the Mainland China and Taiwan actively team up to cut international roaming fees. The two aforementioned executives are expected to reach an agreement on the issue.

Chunghwa Telecom plans to launch mobile phone value-added services in the Chinese mainland and China Unicom needs more experience in 3G operations and value-added services to push its 3G user growth. By October 2009, China Unicom had had a 3G user base of 1 million.
