Huawei to Upgrade Wireless Network for TelenorSHENZHEN, Nov 06, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. has won a six-year contract to upgrade the wireless network in Norway for local telecom operator Telenor Group, a deal that will consolidate the Chinese telecom networking solution provider's foothold in the booming North European market. Telenor Group announced that it had picked Huawei as one of the exclusive networking infrastructure suppliers in a nationwide wireless network upgrade project. Around 9,000 base stations will be upgraded in six years, according to the Fornebu-based company, describing the project as the biggest one it ever kicked off at home. Huawei is expected to work together with Starent Networks, Corp. (Nasdaq: STAR) to redeploy the wireless network set up by Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks, said Telenor Group. Starent Networks, a US-based telecom networking infrastructure solution developer, will provide core technology support in the project. A cooperation with Huawei and Starent Networks will enable Telenor Group to beef up its operation and better its services to bring fresh experience to its customers across the country, according to the Norwegian telecom operator, noting that its two partners outperform their rivals in both technology and product quality. "We are expected to see a network outstanding in capacity, transmission speed, and stability," said Ragnar Kaarhus, head of Telenor Norway, "a replacement of the networking infrastructure will prelude a growth in investment in the coming two years, improving the cost to capital expenditure structure for the company in the long term.' Huawei has been cooperating with Telenor Group for a long time, disclosed a market observer, adding that one of their latest collaborations was announced in June 2009, when the North European telecom operator selected Huawei as an exclusive supplier for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial network in Oslo, capital city of Norway. In August, a controlling subsidiary of Telenor Group agreed to build the first solar energy base station in Bangladesh with Huawei. The contract marks a crucial step for Huawei in the North European market, pointed out market observers. Previously, the Shenzhen-based telecom equipment maker had secured a contract to deploy a 3G network in north Finland for TeliaSonera AB. The Telenor Norway project will demonstrates Huawei's strength and growth in the telecom network deployment field, pointed out an industry insider, predicting that more and more telecom operators in Europe and America will turn to the Chinese company in the future.
