Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets


(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TORONTO _ Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange: Toronto Stock Exchange (11,180.70 up 109.50 points): Nuvo Research Inc. (TSX:NRI). Drug developer. Up 7.5 cents, or 21.74 per cent, to 42 cents on 33,554,681 shares. The Toronto-area company's shares climbed to as high as 51 cents at one point on news its drug, Pennsaid, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurer. Down 73 cents, or 3.55 per cent, to $19.86 on 7,329,188 shares. Canada's largest insurer swung to a loss in the third quarter as lower corporate bond rates pulled down profits and it logged charges related to its actuarial assumptions.

Verenex Energy Inc. (TSX:VNX). Oil and gas. Up 19 cents, or 2.79 per cent, to $6.99 on 6,434,441 shares.


Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX:SLF). Insurer. Down $1.95, or 6.48 per cent, to $28.16 on 6,332,745 shares. The country's third-largest insurer reduced its third-quarter loss to $140 million from a loss of $396 million a year ago, but still missed analysts' expectations.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Oil and gas. Up 23 cents, or 0.65 per cent, to $35.37 on 5,620,343 shares.

Centamin Egypt Ltd. (TSX:CEE). Miner. Up four cents, or 1.69 per cent, to $2.40 on 5,302,343 shares. The metals and mining subgroup on the TSX led all advancers, gaining 1.29 per cent, as the December bullion contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange closed up US$2 to $1,089.30, an all-time high.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,331.55 up 0.20 point): WesternZagros Resources Ltd. (TSXV:WZR). Oil and gas. Up six cents, or 8.22 per cent, to 79 cents on 10,713,581 shares.

Lithic Resources Ltd. (TSXV:LTH). Miner. Down a penny, or 8.33 per cent, to 11 cents on 7,150,408 shares.

Companies reporting major news: Agrium Inc. (TSX:AGU). Fertilizer. Up $2.04, or 3.98 per cent, to $53.27 on 937,949 shares after the fertilizer giant made its ``best and final'' offer for CF Industries Holdings Inc. (NYSE:CF). The latest offer values CF at about US$4.5 billion, a premium of over 67 per cent above CF's closing stock price the day before Agrium first came forward as a suitor.

Canaccord Capital Inc. (TSX:CCI). Financial services. Down 24 cents, or 2.14 per cent, to $10.98 on 645,895 shares after it reinstated its five-cent quarterly dividend, which will be paid starting in December. The company, which is one of Canada's largest independent investment dealers, reported a profit in fiscal second quarter compared with a loss a year ago.

Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. (TSX:MBT). Telecom. Up 69 cents, or 2.19 per cent, to $32.14 on 254,122 shares. Third-quarter profit and revenue dropped as the recession affected the MTS Allstream division and long-distance services.
