City Council to consider Kids First picnic shelter at Tuesday meetingOTTUMWA, Oct 31, 2009 (Ottumwa Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Kids First picnic shelter is likely to take another step forward Tuesday at the Ottumwa City Council meeting. The council will consider the Kids First Committee's plans, which include putting the picnic shelter in the northeast corner of Sycamore Park. In his report, Park Director Gene Rathje said the committee has raised more than half of the necessary funding so far and they plan to build the shelter in 2010. The shelter will be about 30 feet west of the edge of The Beach Ottumwa parking lot and the south edge of the shelter will be about 30 feet north of the playground equipment. The location may have to be adjusted by a few feet to avoid trees and underground utilities. The council will also consider approving: --Recommendations from the Ottumwa Public Safety Advisory Board. --The 2009 Strategic Plan for the city. --Fixing amounts for abating a nuisance/demolition against certain lots in the city. --A zoning ordinance to change the classification of 1402 Albia Road from C-1 (retail business district) to C-2 (commercial district). Staff has recommended approving the first reading and waiving the second and third readings. For your information Ottumwa City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, City Hall. The meeting is open to the public and the proceedings will be broadcast live on GO-TV, cable channel 6.
