BigBand Enhances Switched Digital Video Platform Capabilities

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- BigBand Networks (News - Alert), Inc. (NASDAQ:BBND), a leader in digital video networking, today announced an enhancement to the company's Switched Video Analysis (SVA) solution, offering cable operators further ways to leverage Switched Digital Video (SDV) architectures and BigBand's recently unveiled video software control plane, Converged Video Exchange (CVEx™). The new SVA enhancement is a software upgrade to the industry's most widely deployed SDV platform and offers MSOs the ability to optimize SDV assets and HFC spectrum and to maximize programming availability.

For example, service providers are using the SVA software to track success rates for tunein requests on SDV channels, to plan service group and node splits, and to optimize SDV channels line-ups in order to maximize the number of programs that can be carried in the spectrum (oversubscription) without blocking events. BigBand solutions currently execute billions of real-time transactions, yielding valuable information for network planning and increasing the relevancy of the overall subscriber experience.

"We continue to see tremendous growth for switched digital video. Its benefits to operators extend far beyond bandwidth reclamation," said John Holobinko, vice president of marketing, BigBand Networks. "SDV as a platform can assist operators in providing a myriad of special programming and in acting as an engine for lower cost delivery of valuable applications. SVA provides insight into the behavior of the entire HFC network, which was difficult or impossible to obtain without SDV. We continue to find innovative ways to help operators enhance the delivery path and leverage additional value from their networks." The new SVA capabilities optimize all phases of SDV deployments, from pre-deployment network planning to post-deployment performance measurement. The BigBand SVA is the most comprehensive performance analysis tool for SDV today. BigBand's SDV has been deployed, or is being deployed, by seven of the top 10 cable operators in North America.
