Cisco to purchase Starent Networks
(UPI Business News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) U.S. technology giant Cisco said Tuesday it had spent a second $3 billion in October, this time buying Starent Networks, a mobile phone support company.
Two weeks ago, Cisco said it reached a definitive agreement to purchase Norwegian teleconferencing firm Tandberg for $3 billion.
On Tuesday, Cisco said it reached an agreement to purchase Starent for $2.9 billion, which is a 20 percent premium over Starent's closing share price Monday.
Starent, a Tewskbury, Mass., firm, provides infrastructure solutions to allow mobile operators handle large volumes of data, such as video streaming.
"Combining Cisco's strength in video and IP (Internet protocol) with Starent Network's leading mobile infrastructure solutions creates a compelling portfolio of products that provides an integrated architecture to offer rich, quality multimedia experiences to mobile subscribers on 3G and 4G networks," Starent President and Chief Executive Officer Ashraf Dahod said in a statement.
Previously this year, besides Tandberg, Cisco bought Pure Digital, makers of the Flip video recorders, for $590 million.
