Foster announces $1.25M for City of DeKalb

Sep 30, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Washington, Sep 29 - Today, Congressman Bill Foster (IL-14) announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the City of DeKalb with $1,257,000 for the DeKalb area bus system. This funding was made possible because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which Foster voted for.

"This stimulus funding invests in vital infrastructure needs, and will allow the City of DeKalb to make necessary safety improvements and replace old buses, allowing the transportation system to best serve area residents," said Foster. "Our area bus systems, like the one serving the DeKalb-Sycamore region, provide commuters with a cost-effective way to get to work, taking cars off of our congested roads and lessening our community's dependence on foreign oil. For some of our citizens, buses provide the only means of transportation." The City of DeKalb contracts out with the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) of DeKalb County to provide bus and paratransit service throughout the DeKalb region. The funding will be used to purchase three 35 foot buses, bus shelters, software to track vehicles, fareboxes, and radio systems and will also be used to expand and resurface the transit facility lot.

"I am very pleased to learn of the stimulus money that will be allotted to improve bus service here in the DeKalb area," said DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen. "Public transportation is something that is very important to our citizens as well as our business development." #DAL1234#
