Previously, EEMBC(R) licensees had to pay approximately $1000 for the use of this tool - today EEMBC offers EnergyBench to its licensees without charge. EnergyBench is a standard tool and methodology that calculates the amount of energy a processor consumes while running EEMBC's performance benchmarks. "As energy conservation and green technologies continue to grow in importance, it is EEMBC's responsibility to encourage the measurement and analysis of energy consumption during the design of systems using embedded processors," said Markus Levy, EEMBC president. "The consortium has met the challenge by agreeing to include EnergyBench with the purchase of its benchmark suites." EEMBC has implemented EnergyBench using National Instruments' LabVIEW graphical system design software and X Series data acquisition (DAQ) hardware. While the performance benchmarks are running on the target board, EnergyBench calculates the average energy per iteration using multiple unaliased sampling frequencies and an adaptive statistical process. The DAQ hardware and executable, defined by LabVIEW, sample the voltage levels as well as a trigger channel and write the samples to a file. Users can also use the EEMBC setup to examine minimum and maximum power while the benchmark is running. LabVIEW is a graphical programming environment used to develop measurement, test, and control systems with graphical icons resembling a flowchart. "Efficiency is no longer just a product differentiator - it is a requirement," said Brian Betts, senior group manager for data acquisition at National Instruments. "Because consumer focus continues to trend more and more toward power efficiency, embedded system designers must become increasingly aware of the power requirements in their designs." EnergyBench is included with the purchase of EEMBC AutoBench, ConsumerBench, DENBench, Networking, OABench, TeleBench, or MultiBench suites.
