FON and Ubiquisys to develop femto-cell based wireless communities

(Corporate IT Update Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) FON and Ubiquisys today announced a strategic partnership aimed at combining their expertise to develop wireless communities based on the Ubiquisys femto-cell.

FON, a collaboration of Internet users that make available Wi-Fi capable routers for use by other members of the community, currently has over 1.5 million registered members and a growing list of leading Telco partners such as British Telecom, SFR France, ZON Portugal, Comstar Russia and E-Plus Germany, who add FON functionality to their broadband, further expanding the global WiFi network. Google, eBay, British Telecom, Index Ventures, Coral Group and Sequoia Capital are investors in FON.

Ubiquisys is a developer and vendor of mobile technology specialising in femtocells. Its ZoneGate femtocells are manufactured with Sony UK Tech and are available as standalone units or as part of a residential gateway device such as Netgear's DVG834GH and SerComm's FC210U.

The idea behind the partnership is to provide wireless access based on Ubiquisys femtocell technology, helping to relieve the current congested 3G frequencies and to provide wireless mobile users with wireline quality connections through the FON network.

FON and Ubiquisys are in discussion with several mobile operators to evaluate the Femto Fonera concept.
