Mexico Telecoms Industry Eyes Chinese Investments

BEIJING, Sep 09, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Mexico is willing to lure investments from Chinese telecoms companies via preferential policies, according to the country's Federal Telecommunications Commission (COFETEL).

On September 8, 2009, the southern Chinese city of Xiamen raised the curtain for the 13th China International Fair For Investment & Trade, where the COFETEL and ProMexico, an agency for the promotion of Mexican trade and investment, plan to introduce the public biddings in their country's telecoms industry, involving a total investment of USD 700 million.

Besides, some Mexican telecoms operators are set to seek Chinese partners via the fair, such as America Movil (NYSE: AMX), Telcel, and Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex, NYSE: TMX).

From 2002 to 2008, the Mexican telecoms industry totally won foreign investments of USD 2.954 billion, including only USD 183 million and USD 5 million in the past two years. Thus, the Mexican government has made many measures to boost such investments since the beginning of 2009, citing another report.
