Taliban Bomber Captured in Kandahar

Sep 04, 2009 (Voice of America News/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- NATO says Afghan and international security forces have captured a Taliban militant wanted in connection with several bombing attacks in southern Afghanistan.

A NATO statement issued Thursday says a joint force searched for the suspected militant west of Kandahar City, near the village of Chalghowi in Kandahar Province. It says intelligence led troops to him, and he was apprehended on a roadway without incident Wednesday. NATO says the suspect was involved in attacks using improvised explosive devices (IED's).

Meanwhile, international security officials says two service members died Thursday after their patrol hit an explosive device in southern Afghanistan. A statement released by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) did not list the nationalities of the service members.

Britain's Defense Ministry says two British soldiers were killed during separate incidents in southern Helmand province.

Officials say one soldier was shot and killed Thursday morning during a routine patrol. Another died during a bombing on Wednesday.

Some 212 British servicemen have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001.

On Wednesday, the Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed Afghanistan's deputy chief of intelligence, along with at least 22 other people, in east Afghanistan.

The bombing occurred Wednesday morning as a crowd left a mosque in the city of Mehtarlam in Laghman province, about 100 kilometers east of Kabul.

The Taliban says intelligence deputy chief Abdullah Laghmani, who was in the crowd, was the target. At least 35 people were wounded.

NATO issued a statement Thursday condemning the bombing. It says the suicide attack demonstrates that those who claim to be the enemies of the government and international troops are instead the enemies of the Afghan people.
