Networking best way to land a job, report says

Aug 17, 2009 (Tri-City Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Networking is the most effective tool for those looking for a job, says a report released Monday Aug. 17 by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

The survey, given to hiring executives, also found that social/professional networking sites, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter ranked second in effectiveness among various job search methods.

Attending job fairs, responding to newspaper classified and sending resumes to employers as tools for finding jobs got relatively low marks in the survey.

"Job fairs are particularly ineffective in recessions. They are heavily attended by job seekers and lightly attended by employers. Many of the employers that do attend are seeking very low-level workers, volunteers or unpaid sales representatives/franchisees who would have to be prodigious sellers to make a living wage," said John A. Challenger, CEO of Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

"And, while job seekers do get to interact with a representative of the company at the job fair, it hardly qualifies as networking. The employer representative is rarely a decision maker and simply there to administer and collect applications." -- Pratik Joshi: 582-1541; [email protected]; Business Beat blog at www.tricityherald.com.
