BRIEF: Parvo cases force Paws & Claws to close

COLUMBUS, Aug 16, 2009 (Columbus Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The local animal shelter had to be shut down recently due to positive cases of parvovirus.

Two dogs tested positive for the virus. Because of the cost of treatment, the dogs, a rottweiler puppy and a lab mix, were both euthanized.

The Erna R. Badstieber Paws & Claws Adoption Center has been closed since Wednesday and will tentatively reopen to the public Tuesday, said Deb Potter, vice president of the Platte Valley Humane Society.

When it opens again, only cats will be adoptable. Dogs won't be able to be adopted until Aug. 27 and will only be available upon the recommendation of a veterinarian, Potter said.
