LAPAN LAUNCHES ONLINE LIBRARY, SPACE COMMUNITY

Jakarta, Jul 29, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- The Institute of National Aviation and Outer Space (LAPAN) has inaugurated an online library and an Indonesian space community.

LAPAN Chief Secretary Bambang Koesoemanto dedicated the online library and the space community in an event themed "Dissemination of Rocket and Satellite Developments in Indonesia" held at the LAPAN building here on Wednesday.

He said the online library was expected to help promote public interest in outer space, rockets and satellites which had so far been very low.

Of a total of 8,000 books of LAPAN's collections, 5,000 books could be accessed online through the Internet, he said.

"However, because of the copyright issue, the public can only access their titles, authors' names and the books' lists of contents," he said.

For the future, LAPAN planned to provide delivery services of books borrowed or ordered online by the public.

In addition to the books, LAPAN also had a collection of 2,000 titles of audiovisual materials which could be seen directly at LAPAN's library.

LAPAN was also promoting an outer-space community through a mailing-list with e-mail-address: [email protected].

The space community is expected to attract those who love space-related matters.

In the long term, the LAPAN's online library and space community are expected to help encourage Indonesia to become self-reliant in rocket and space development, Koesoemanto said.
