BRIEF: Jessamine officials warn of scam efforts tied to dog-wolf hybridJul 24, 2009 (The Lexington Herald-Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The director of the Jessamine County SAVE Center heard word Thursday that people were improperly collecting money locally from the public on behalf of Dakota, the dog-wolf hybrid in its custody since Monday. Dakota has been in the news since critically injuring a newborn in a home they shared in Jessamine County. The infant, Alexander James Smith, is now in serious condition at the University of Kentucky Hospital. SAVE Center officials issued a statement Friday explaining that "any other websites, emails, etc, soliciting donations for Dakota are NOT connected to the SAVE Center and should be carefully scrutinized." The center added that Dakota is doing fine and eating well. Cattery manager Anna Cox said the center has been inundated with calls about the beleaguered dog. "If everyone who called would come by and rescue a dog, we'd all be home on vacation," Cox said. "There are plenty of feel-good rescues here for everybody."
