[July 10, 2009] Sheriff's Office releases new information in I-580 shooting in San Leandro Tweet SAN LEANDRO, Jul 10, 2009 (The Daily Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Alameda County sheriff's investigators on Friday released a video that shows two vehicles believed to be involved in a February shooting on Interstate 580 that took a motorist's eye and wounded a deputy while he conducted a pedestrian stop. The Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help in finding the suspects and is offering a $17,000 reward. "These are the kind of people we don't want in our area," Sgt. J.D. Nelson said of the suspects. "They have no regard for human life." As many as five suspects between the two cars are believed to be involved in the incident reported about 12:40 a.m. Feb. 21, Sgt. Dave Dickson said. Authorities did not release the suspects' descriptions. The two vehicles are described as a white, two-door Honda hatchback and a four-door Honda Civic in a combination of a blue, silver or gray colors, both early to mid-1990s models. The video also shows an important detail on the four-door Honda Civic: The vehicle's hood seems to be rusting and losing paint, Detective Todd Hoos said. Investigators were able to identify the vehicles in a surveillance video captured at 12:33 a.m. on the parking lot of the Budget Inn on Foothill Boulevard in Hayward. The two vehicles are later seen following a gray Ford Explorer driven by Marcos Cruz, of Hayward -- the man who was shot in the eye -- west on Foothill Boulevard, Dickson said. The vehicles eventually entered I-580, and multiple shots were fired in unincorporated San Leandro in the direction of Cruz's vehicle, authorities said. The results: -- One bullet struck Cruz's left eye, prompting him to careen his car off the freeway and crash into a Montessori school. No one was on the campus at the time. The damaged eye was removed during emergency surgery, authorities said. One of his two passengers suffered minor injuries, while the other was uninjured. -- Another shot hit Deputy Brenton Cantrell in his right thigh while he was conducting a pedestrian stop near 16500 Foothill Boulevard, not far from I-580. Cantrell continues to suffer complications from his injury, authorities said. -- A third bullet shattered a sliding-glass door to the bedroom of a house. No one was injured.
