Seminars on online networking planned

NEW HAVEN, Jul 01, 2009 (New Haven Register - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Whether connecting with family and friends or boosting a company's marketing presence and bottom line, social networking Web sites have evolved into influential tools.

To help members, entrepreneurs and business executives harness the power of those sites, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce's Technology Council will hold a series of programs this summer.

Presentations will be held 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the chamber, 900 Chapel St., 10th floor.

On July 8 there will be a discussion on "Facebook: How Tos and How Not Tos," by Ali Parmelee, co-owner and creative director for Think Creative Group, a New Haven marketing agency.

That session will be followed Aug. 12 by "All About Twitter," with Amy Graver, president and creative director for Elements LLC, a New Haven firm that provides visual and written communications for businesses.

The final session will be Sept. 9, titled "What's Blogging All About?" The speaker is yet to be announced.

"Chambers of commerce are typically thought of as stodgy groups of businesspeople who are not up on the latest technology and we want to dispel that," said Anthony Rescigno, president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber wants to "take the bull by the horns to educate our members about social networking tools," Rescigno said, adding that face-to-face interaction is still a strong component of conducting business.

But the ability to reach a lot of people through social networking cannot be ignored, he said. The chamber has an account on Facebook, Rescigno said.

"We want to be at the forefront," he said.

The Technology Council's mission is to educate and promote the awareness of how technology can improve a company's productivity.

Admission to each presentation is free for chamber members and $10 for nonmembers. To register, visit www.gnhcctech. com or call Paul Tommaselli at 782-4342.

In other news, the Human Resource Council will meet at 8 a.m. Oct. 23 at the chamber's headquarters on "Uses and Implications of Online Social Networking for Employers."
