Profile of China's software industry in January-May, 2009


BEIJING, Jun 24, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The following is a profile of China's software industry for the January-May period of 2009: -- Overview The industry's revenue climbed to 329.14 billion yuan in the first five months of 2009, up 23.3 percent year on year. This marked a drop of 5.7 percentage point from that of the same period last year.

In May, the industry's revenue amounted to 73.92 billion yuan, up 22.4 percent year on year, yet still 8.2 percentage points lower than March.


Chart Two below shows the monthly revenue growth in January-May of both 2008 and 2009.

The industry's profit over the first five months was 33.2 billion yuan, up 25.8 percent year on year. The growth rate was 8.2 percentage points lower than one year prior.

-- Development of different sectors Revenue from software products, which accounted for 35 percent of the industry's total, amounted to 115.22 billion yuan in the first five months of this year, up 24.2 percent year on year, though the value fell 0.8 percentage points since the same period of 2008.

Otherwise, revenue from the software technology service sector advanced 28.2 percent to hit 65.93 billion yuan, compared to the 46.8 percent growth in the same period of 2008. Included in that amount was 8.7 billion yuan from software outsourcing services, which climbed 84.7 percent year on year.

The embedded system software section's revenue in the January-May period was 61.02 billion yuan, up 20.9 percent year on year. The growth rate, however, had fallen 1.7 percentage points since the same period of the previous year.

The integrated system section recorded revenues of 77.38 billion yuan, up 20.9 percent year on year, compared to the 30.1 percent a year ago.

And IC design revenue rose 15.4 percent to 9.58 billion yuan. That growth rate managed to clock in 0.7 percentage points higher than the first five months of 2008, and but stood 7.9 percentage points below the industry's average.

-- Software industry by region Chart Five shows the revenue and growth rates of East, Middle and West China in the first five months of 2009.

While industry size in East China accounted for 86.7 percent of the country's total, the industry in West China witnessed the highest growth rate.

Following, Chart Six shows the industry's revenue growth in terms of regions during the first five months of 2009.

-- Exports expand, especially outsourcing services The export value of China's software industry grew 54.2 percent year on year to reach 6.56 billion U.S. dollars during the first five months, which was respectively six and 9.2 percentage points higher than the January-April period and one year prior.

Included in the expanded exports were 670 million dollars from outsourcing services, hiked up 59 percent year on year. This represented a 33.2 percentage point improvement over the January-April period of 2009, but also a retreat of 9.3 percentage points from the same period of 2008.
