ZTE Forays into the Vietnamese WCDMA Market

SHENZHEN, Jun 10, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- ZTE Corporation (SEHK: 0763; SZSE: 000063) has inked a WCDMA contract with Viettel, the largest telecommunications carrier in Vietnam.

Before signing the contract, Viettel carried out HSPA+ capability tests in CSL's commercial network in Hong Kong, which was jointly built in cooperation with ZTE. Meanwhile, assessments on 64 users with single cell capability were conducted in ZTE's laboratories in Shenzhen.

Because ZTE successfully helped CSL, Hong Kong's number one mobile carrier, build the world's first SDR (Soft Defined Radio)-based all-IP commercial network, it finally won the favor of Viettel.

Vietnam is the world's important burgeoning telecoms market. The number of its registered telephone users reaches 82.25 million, including 85.5% mobile phone users. Revenues from the country's telecoms industry surged 38% in 2008. Viettel takes a 40% market share nationwide.

ZTE has gotten a license from China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (NYSE: CHU; SEHK: 0762; SHSE: 600050) to deploy WCDMA networks in Tianjin and provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, and Shandong. It has also forayed into the European markets such as Romania, Turkey, Estonia, and White Russia.
