Alion Lands $1.5M Army Task Order to Build a New MPH System

Jun 09, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions provider, has been awarded a $1.5 million U.S. Army task order to build a new Mobile Parts Hospital (MPH) system.

Three MPH systems are currently used in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan to provide critically needed replacement parts to warfighters to help ensure the success of their missions.

In a release, the company noted that it is building the MPH for the Industrial Base Operations Directorate under the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM) Life Cycle Management Command. The primary MPH unit is housed in an 8-foot-tall, 8-foot-wide by 20-foot-long ISO container. It functions like a small factory designed to fabricate a wide variety of parts for mission-critical needs. The MPH system is transportable by land, sea and air with air transport accommodated on C-130 military transport planes.

"MPH has proven to be a force multiplier by providing critically needed parts for equipment repair at the point of need," said Chris Amos, Alion Senior Vice President and Manager of the Technology Solutions Group. "The current unit is being built with a number of improvements to enhance performance over the original design that is based on operational feedback from the field." The contract period of performance runs through September 30.

Since initial deployment in 2003, the MPH systems have fabricated more than 100,000 parts. Work on the task order, which was issued from the Manufacturing Process Technologies for Military Equipment Replacement on Demand contract vehicle, includes full assembly and testing of the system. Work is being performed at the Alion Rapid Manufacturing Facility in Mount Clemens, Mich.
