SHC notices EPA, PTA in mobile phone antenna case

KARACHI, Jun 05, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Sindh High Court Thursday issued notice to DG Environmental Protection Agency, Chairman Pakistan Telecom Authority & others over installation of mobile phone antenna in populated area. Residents of Block 3-D, Nazimabad, Karachi alleged M/s Burraq (Wi-Tribe) Telecom Ltd company illegally constructed BTS tower on second floor of building on Plot No. 19/17 in populated area.

Their counsel Abid Rajput stated PTA & EPA were responsible to issue NOC for installation of cellular phone towers strictly under environmental laws, while KBCA bound to curb violations of buildings laws. Cellular company neither obtained NOCs from PTA, EPA nor approval from KBCA. Heavy BTS tower could cause collapse of dilapidated building. He prayed to direct respondents remove phone antenna, as it emitted rays hazardous to human health.

SHC division bench comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed & Justice Bin Yamin after preliminary hearing issued notices to DG EPA Sindh, Chairman PTA, KBCA Chief Controller, others for July 01, 2009 to file comments/ counter affidavits.
