'Fraunhofer Institute develops mobile carpool platform'

(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The German Fraunhofer Institute is developing an application, under the project name OpenRide, that will make it possible to exchange information on carpooling using a mobile phone platform. OpenRide operates through the combined use of mobile handsets and navigation and route planning software. Users can offer a ride or will be able to find out where they can hitch a ride. According to the Fraunhofer Institut, it will be an open infrastructure for ad hoc carpooling. The institute hopes to close the development phase in the fall of 2010 at the latest and to have OpenRide ready for commercial use.
