ITM grad commits to play at Sul Ross

May 30, 2009 (Kerrville Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- When Kenny Avans walked off the field for the last time as an Ingram Tom Moore Warrior in the fall, he came to a startling realization in regards to his football career.

"I felt like that was it," Avans said.

But after some social networking in the offseason, the ITM graduate has signed a letter of intent to play football at Division III Sul Ross State University in Alpine this fall.

"I'm stoked," Avans said. "I thought football was over for me after high school, then when they gave me an offer to play college football, I was like 'Hey, I can still do this.'" Avans will play for the freshman team, as coaches hope to get the 6-foot-2-inch quarterback some more experience under center before moving him up to the Lobos' varsity program.

"I'm kind of hoping to get a lot better and a lot bigger," Avans said. "I'm pretty much just trying to improve a lot more." Avans wound up at SRSU after a former Tom Moore teammate showed him the Web site beRecruited.com, an online network connecting high school athletes to college coaches. The site, which allows fans, coaches and players to create their own personal profiles, details everything from a recruit's on-field statistics to their academic achievements. There are even areas to upload photos and videos -- anything that may entice a potential coach.

It was there that Avans, with the help of his mother's constant encouragement, caught the attention of Sul Ross State.

Once the Tom Moore alumnus visited the campus in Alpine, he was sold on the idea of being a Lobo.

"I like the campus -- it's actually pretty big," Avans said. "It's out in the mountain area of Texas. I'm an outdoors guy, so I like it out there."
