High-tech system being developed to guide aircraft operationsKochi, May 15, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- India is giving much importance to the satellite navigation system and plans are on to develop a system based on global positioning augmentation which would essentially help in aircraft operations, a senior scientist said here today. "To start with, we are talking about a space based augmentation for the Global Positioning System. We call it 'Gagan'...Which would essentially help in aircraft operations or precise landing system. We are working with the Civil Aviation Ministry in devising the system based on the GPS Augmentation", Dr K Radhakrishnan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, said. The Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS) would be in place in another three years, he said after inaugurating a two-day All India Seminar on 'innovations in electronics technology for futuristic communications'. Advances in communication has led to the world becoming a smaller place and one of the major contributors to this revolution has been space, he said. As of now the country has got 210 transponders and by the end of the 11th plan, there would be around 500 such transponders, he said. "Apart from the C-Band, Extended C-Band and KU Band, we are also getting into the Higher frequency band - KA Band, providing ultra small aperture terminal communication, which will make a revolution in the rural communication too", he said. |
