Curtiss-Wright Unleashes Performance of Freescale's QorIQ™ P4080 Device for Military/Aerospace Applications

AUSTIN, Texas & LEESBURG, Va. --(Business Wire)-- To meet stringent market requirements for high performance and low-power operation within space- and weight- constrained environments, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing is announcing plans to develop a family of rugged, single board computers (SBCs) based on Freescale's QorIQ™ P4080 eight-core communications processor.

Curtiss-Wright plans to use the advanced device based on Power Architecture® technology for a new line of SBCs based on open standards and designed for demanding military and aerospace markets. The family of SBCs is engineered to leverage the flexibility, security enhancements and rich feature set of the QorIQ P4080 processor, providing a trusted computing environment even in harsh military and aerospace applications.

"The performance, low-power operation and robust functionality of Freescale's QorIQ P4080 device takes embedded multicore processing to entirely new levels," said Lynn Patterson, vice president and general manager of Modular Solutions, Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing. "We are excited to extend our unmatched commitment to delivering the industry's most advanced Power Architecture compute engines by launching our new family of SBCs based on Freescale's flagship eight-core product. These boards will deliver the next generation in performance per watt computing on Power Architecture technology." Momentum for QorIQ processors Curtiss-Wright's adoption of the QorIQ P4080 device underscores growing industry acceptance for Freescale's QorIQ multicore processors within networking, telecommunications, industrial and military/aerospace markets. In March, Freescale announced it is accelerating delivery of QorIQ products in response to high demand from wireless infrastructure equipment manufacturers. QorIQ products are sampling now to more than a dozen OEM customers and are being used in the development of next-generation networking and communications infrastructure equipment. Customer validation/bring-up activities have continued on or ahead of schedule and volume production is expected to begin in 45-nanometer at the end of 2009.

"Curtiss-Wright's decision to base its newest product line on Freescale's QorIQ P4080 device is the latest example of the tremendous marketplace response that our QorIQ products are generating," said Preet Virk, marketing director for Freescale. "Having world-class companies such as Curtiss-Wright extend their continued commitment to Freescale's embedded multicore products bodes well for the adoption and acceptance of QorIQ technology." About QorIQ Communications Platforms Freescale's QorIQ platforms deliver new levels of performance, power-efficiency and programmability and are built using one or more high-performance Power Architecture® cores. The QorIQ platforms provide a coherent multicore migration solution that enables embedded designers and equipment manufacturers to move to multicore with confidence. The processors consist of single, dual and many cores, all based on Freescale's e500 Power Architecture technology. The QorIQ communications platforms begin with the P1 and P2 platforms -- five package-, pin- and software-compatible processors designed to ease the transition from single- to dual-core processing. The QorIQ P4 platform, the signature member of the product line, integrates up to eight enhanced Power Architecture® cores, a tri-level cache hierarchy, innovative CoreNet™ on-chip fabric and datapath acceleration. All platforms are delivered at 45-nanometer geometries, offering exceptional performance at embedded power budgets.
