Nicaragua to continue diplomatic ties with Iran: FM

MANAGUA, May 04, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Nicaraguan government will continue its diplomatic ties with Iran and the U.S. can not question the decision, Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Samuel Santos said on Monday.

"Nicaragua's diplomatic ties with Iran are framed in law, and nobody can question them," Santos said on private TV channel 12.

Nicaragua respects the friendship of the U.S. with other countries, and the U.S. needs to respect Nicaragua's, he added.

Santos made the remarks due to a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week, when she said that her government is concerned about the Iranian presence in Nicaragua and the rest of the Americas.

Santos said that Nicaragua's diplomatic ties with Iran will continue moving on in order to increase them.

Nicaragua resumed diplomatic ties with Iran after Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega took office in January 2007. The two countries severed ties at the begging of the 1990s.
