Bridgestone, other Japanese firms to suspend Mexican operations

TOKYO, May 01, 2009 (Kyodo News International - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Bridgestone Corp. and other Japanese firms said Friday they will suspend operations in Mexico for five days until Tuesday as the Mexican government has urged its agencies and businesses to do so to help prevent the spread of a new influenza.

Bridgestone said its four plants for production of tires and relevant materials will be closed during the period. These plants, where nine Japanese employees are still working, have provided tires to North American auto plants.

Camera maker Canon Inc. said it has ordered its Mexican sales arm's 219 employees, including five Japanese workers, to stay at home during the period. Senior officials at the sales arm will check the health conditions of their deputies during the period before business operations are resumed Wednesday.

Mitsui Chemicals Inc. said its Mexican plant will suspend production of chemical materials for vehicles during the period and decide whether to resume operations Wednesday depending on moves of automakers.

Shin-Etsu Polymer Co. said it will close its cellular phone plant until Tuesday. Electronics maker Sony Corp. said its sales arm in Mexico City will suspend operations until the same day.
