China Telecom Brewing WiFi Handsets

SHENZHEN, Apr 14, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Though it is an open question when the limits set by the Chinese authorities on the WiFi can be lifted, Chinese mobile phone makers and telcos are pushing for handsets with the ability to access the Web wirelessly via the WiFi.

China Telecom is brewing its own WiFi handsets with the help of mobile phone makers after it launched the CDMA WiFi network cards as a transitionary approach for its mobile phone subscribers to surf on the Internet wirelessly.

The first CDMA EVDO mobile phones of China Telecom are due to hit the market in May or June this year. However, they will come without WiFi functions.

Chinese mobile phone makers are forging customized WiFi handsets for China Telecom. By now networking gear maker ZTE has developed the handsets. Running counter to the Chinese telecom regulators, three Chinese major carriers have all showed their support to the WiFi. And their future 3G handsets will be compatible with it.
