Ashby helps GC beat ACM [Cumberland Times News, Md.]

(Cumberland Times-News (MD) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Apr. 10--CUMBERLAND -- The Garrett College Lakers rallied for one in the sixth, and one in the eighth, with Jason Ashby driving in both runs; then held off an Allegany College of Maryland rally in the top of the ninth to come way with a 6-5 Maryland JUCO victory over the Trojans Thursday at The Rock.

The game was played at Allegany, but was Garrett's home game as the Lakers' home field was still covered with snow Thursday morning.

In a back-and-forth contest, Allegany took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but Garrett came back with single runs in the first and second, and two in the third to lead 4-3. The Trojans, however, scored two in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, but would get no more as winning pitcher Matt Sisler came on to shut them down on two hits the rest of the way to get the win.

Garrett tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when, with one out, Ricardo Cordido walked. Brett Martin followed with a single to the hole, but a throwing error by the Allegany shortstop put runners on first and third. Cordido then scored the tie run when Ashby came through with an RBI ground-ball out.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cordido got it started again when he singled and stole second for the Lakers. After a fielder's choice moved him to third, Ashby drove him home with a single for the eventual winning run.

The Lakers were not out of the woods, however, as the Trojans tried to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth. Ethan Newton led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a fielder's choice. Sam Watkins hit a hard ground ball to the Garrett third baseman, who gunned it home to cut down Newton at the Plate. Sisler then got Brad Kling to line out to center field to end the game and give Garrett the victory.

Ashby had three singles and drove in three runs for Garrett, while Cordido doubled and singled. Martin also doubled and singled, and Corey Carr had two singles.

For Allegany, A.J. Czap hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Newton had three singles and Watkins doubled.

Sisler threw four innings and gave up two hits to get the win, while Allegany starter Ryan MacNamara had seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Garrett (19-14 overall, 7-7 Maryland JUCO) is scheduled to play host to Potomac State today at 2 p.m. Allegany (28-8, 13-5) will play a doubleheader Saturday, 1 p.m., at Anne Arundel.

Frostburg State 9 8 La Roche 8 3 FROSTBURG -- Freshman duo of Doug Anuszewski and Pat Sapp came up big for the Frostburg State baseball team in a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent La Roche, Thursday afternoon.

Anuszewski delivered for the Bobcats (16-10, 8-2) in the bottom of the seventh inning as he punched the game-winning run across the plate with a suicide squeeze handing FSU a 9-8 victory.

Frostburg won the second game, 8-3.

The first contest saw a solid pitchers dual for the first five innings as aces Phil Avolio and Freddy Foshay battled to a scoreless deadlock. Frostburg State finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth as senior Joe Clark hammered a two-run home run over the left field wall with two outs.

La Roche (9-14, 5-7) came back with power of its own in the top of the sixth as George Nahay had an RBI single and was followed by a two-run home run by Justin Alessio for a 3-2 advantage.

The Bobcats seemingly took control of the game as they exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth capped by another stroke of power as sophomore Timothy Sutcliffe pounded his fifth home run of the season. Clark and Sutcliffe each drove in two RBIs in the inning.

Senior closer Gary Wolfe came on in the seventh with an 8-3 lead, but failed to shut the door on the Redhawks as they posted five runs on five hits in the inning. Frostburg State brought in Trevor Conner to cool the LRC charge as he retired the final two outs of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Teon Richburg drove a one-out double down the right field line to put the winning run in scoring position. Senior Andrew Sacks moved Richburg to third with a pinch-hit single to set up Anuszewski to hand FSU the conference victory.

Conner was credited with the win to improve his record to 5-0 on the season, while Clark led FSU at the plate with a 2-for-4 contest and driving in four RBIs.

In game two, Frostburg State wasted no time getting on the board as Sapp drove home Clark and junior Joe Garrity with a single to left field in the bottom of the first inning.

After the Redhawks took a 3-2 lead, FSU put the game away with four runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.

Greg Beachy took the victory for his fourth win of the season, while adding six strikeouts to bring his team-leading total to 43. At the plate, FSU was led by Garrity who was 2-for-2 with a triple and Sapp who recorded three RBIs in a 1-for-2 outing.

Frostburg State returns to Bob Wells Field for a non-conference game against Stevenson today at 2 p.m.
