United States: T-Mobile launches Douglas County s first data center

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Wireless telecommunications company T-Mobile launched construction Thursday of a data center here that will replace all its other data centers nationwide, a company official said.

"When we grow, we will grow here," Robert Strickland, a senior vice president for the company, said Thursday after a ceremony to begin construction on its data center near Pangborn Memorial Airport. The company currently has two data centers in Bothell and others across the country. All will be consolidated into the East Wenatchee site, he said.

The center could employ up to 20 people he said. Some maintenance positions could be local hires, he said.

The data center will house hundreds of high-capacity computers. It will be part of Intergate.Columbia, a multi-tenant data center complex developed by Tukwila-based Sabey Corp.

Strickland hopes to begin operating at least a part of the 205,000-square-foot center by Thanksgiving. About 35,000 square feet of that space would initially be dedicated to servers, he said. The rest will be saved for growth.

Construction could begin over the next few weeks, but could be slowed by cold weather.

Temperatures in the mid-teens would have given renewed meaning to the term "groundbreaking" Thursday had it not been for some quick thinking by Sabey personnel.

Before the ceremony, a backhoe softened a small patch of earth near twin pagoda-like tents erected for the event.

Sabey also trucked in some potting soil to ensure the suited and top-coated executives could, on cue, each dig up a respectable shovelful of earth.

Local and visiting dignitaries huddled in their overcoats under a brilliant blue sky and intense sun, a solid sheet of packed snow and ice under their feet.

"This project is a renewal," Dave Sabey, president and founder of Sabey Corp., told the crowd. "It's a chance for this area to be a player in the industry of the future, the information age." Strickland said T-Mobile chose the Sabey site for its protection from flooding and other natural disasters.

One of the company's two data centers in Bothell flooded Dec. 3 after heavy rains and "went dark" or lost power a major setback, considering that companies need their data centers to operate continuously, without interruption.

The East Wenatchee site is northeast of Pangborn, off Grant Road far from rivers and not prone to earthquakes, he said.

Strickland also pointed to low-cost power supplied by Douglas County PUD, the center's short two-hour driving distance to T-Mobile's U.S. headquarters in Bellevue and its proximity to Pangborn Memorial Airport.

He said the company chose the Pangborn-area site over 10 others nationwide, including Colorado Springs, Dallas, Albuquerque and St. Louis.

T-Mobile is a division of German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom. It provides cellular phone and wireless networking services.
