Logon Collins Boys tennis Union Collins moved from No. 2 doubles state champion to playing No. 1 singles. The junior made the jump well -- Collins stands 14-0 this season with tournament triumphs at Holland Hall and Jenks.

Andrea Lewis Girls tennis Bishop Kelley The two-time state No. 1 singles champion is off to a good start again. Lewis is 10-1 with a tournament championship at Tahlequah and runner-up finish at Jenks.

Christian Mata Boys soccer Union Freshman had four goals and one assist en route to tourney MVP honors in Huntsville, Ala., last weekend. Union, No. 8 nationally, captured three wins over top 50 teams to win the title.

Whitney Brannan Girls soccer Victory Christian Junior followed an outstanding preseason run with a six-goal, one-assist performance in Victory Christian's 6-1 victory over Drumright last week. Brannan is a two-time all-metro team selection.

SOCCER NOTEBOOK Union-Jenks night: Jenks will visit Union in a pair of rivalry soccer matches on Thursday night.

The girls' match will pit Union (ranked sixth nationally) against a strong Jenks program. The Redskins have won the past two state titles, while Jenks won the gold ball in 2006.

The Union boys have won two of the past four state championships, and are ranked eighth in the nation. They just beat three top 50 teams to capture the Southern Soccer Challenge in Huntsville, Ala., last weekend.

The girls match is at 6 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. boys contest.

International man: Booker T. Washington goalkeeper Preston Langholz, fresh off a playing stint in Argentina with the U18 U.S. National Pool, led the Hornets to two big victories.

Langholz stopped three shots in a shootout win over East Central, and saved two shots in a shootout victory over Jenks. Washington's win over Jenks was its first in 10 seasons.

The Hornets are Class 5A's defending state champions and are currently top-ranked.

Another match to watch: The Edison girls will play at Booker T. Washington on Friday night. The match decided the 5A-4 winner last year, which is important because it means potentially not facing 10-time state champion Bishop Kelley until the state tournament's final match.

On the rise: Westville is ranked No. 8 in Class 4A's boys' rankings. It's the highest mark for the six-year program.

Boys stars: Catoosa sophomore Adam Schmoker has four goals and an assist last week ... Senior Kyle Langley had three goals and three assists in wins last week for Westville ... Claremore's Dylan Weaver has five goals against Edison, while Zebras goalkeeper Marcus Trahan has shutouts in four of seven matches.

On the girls side: Verdigris' Mallary Schaub missed last year with a knee injury. Last week, she had four goals in a win versus Porter and has been important in the team's 6-0-1 start ... Metro Christian's Allison Tipton, a four-year starter, has led the No. 3 Patriots to a 2-0 start.

By Eric Bailey, World Sports Writer Tennis noteBOOK New classes: The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has shifted the classification of all the tennis teams to coincide with other sports.

Instead of Class 5A, 4A and 3A, tennis is now grouped 6A, 5A and 4A. The only major change from a year ago is that OKC McGuinness moves up two spots from 3A to 5A.

There are now 32 teams each in 6A and 5A and 54 in 4A.

Bigger tournament: The annual Metro tournament begins Monday with Division I hitting the courts for the two-day event. The girls report to LaFortune Tennis Center except for the No. 1 singles, which will play at Shadow Mountain. The boys report to Jenks High School except for the No. 1 singles, which play at The Grand.

April 13-14 features Division II competition, while Division III players start April 15-16.

More than state's best: Whitney Ritchie is not only the best No. 1 girls singles player in the state, the OKC McGuinness junior is No. 1 in the Missouri Valley junior rankings, too.

She has won the last seven Missouri Valley tournament and was selected Missouri Valley player of the year. On Sunday, she made a verbal commitment to the University of Oklahoma.

The McGuinness girls are a heavy favorite in Class 5A as Ritchie and junior Mia Lancaster will be tough to handle.

Kelley's Cale Hammond is ranked No. 2 in the Missouri Valley. However, there are other players not far behind including Cascia Hall's Chase Tomlins, Union's Logon Collins and Trevor Horstmann.

Rare win: Early this season, the Cascia Hall's boys team made school history, according to coach Jon Parker. The Commandos defeated Jenks for the first time in a dual match.

All rankings by okrankings.com golf notebook Weather or not: Snow and sleet in March? Now you know one of the reasons -- weather -- why Bixby senior Karsten Majors chose to sign with Nevada-Las Vegas.

"The weather out there is awesome," Majors said.

Majors survived windy conditions Tuesday to post a winning score of 71 in the B.A. Maxwell at Broken Arrow Golf and Athletic Club. He was one of only four participants to post a score in the 70s.

But climate wasn't the only factor Majors weighed during the recruiting process. Majors was impressed that UNLV's coach, Dwaine Knight, spent five years on the PGA Tour and has a reputation as a good putting coach. "Putting has been a weaker part of my game," Majors said.

Majors said he is looking forward to playing "amazing" golf courses in Las Vegas. His older brother, Draegen, is a junior at SMU.

Moonlighting: Karsten Majors played football (he was a backup kicker) at Bixby last fall because he wanted to be around friends on the team. He wasn't worried that playing a contact sport would jeopardize his golf future.

"I was only kicking," he said. "I probably wasn't going to break anything anyway." Unique tournament: The B.A. Maxwell was played under the same format as the Maxwell Invitational, a college tournament held annually in Ardmore.

Golfers from one school all played in the same group. Golfers in high school and college tournaments usually play in groups with golfers from other schools.

They're hot: Copan's Preston Bartley, who placed ninth in the Class 2A state tournament last year, is riding a string of three consecutive first-place finishes.

Inola's Jeremy Phillipo has three consecutive top-five finishes, including first at the Edison Invitational.

Championship venue: One of the state's newer and more challenging courses, Emerald Falls in Broken Arrow, has been selected to host the boys and girls Class 6A state tournaments.

-- By Jimmie Tramel, World Sports Writer By JON POTTS World Correspondent Berryhill posted an impressive 13-0 run-rule win over visiting Cascia Hall Tuesday.

Tyler Brown (3-0) pitched a complete game, striking out 10 and allowing just four hits and one walk.

Berryhill (12-0) hit three home runs. Dusty Harper and Walker Davidson both hit two-run homers while Clayton Green added a solo shot.

Paul Thetford was 2-for-2 with a double for the Commandos (6-7).

The Chiefs got their first run in the bottom of the first. Green took a full count and sent a homer over the left-field fence.

In the top of the third, Cascia loaded the bases, but Brown handled the Commandos with two strikeouts and a shallow flyout to right.

"That was big-time clutch," Berryhill head coach Brian Hailey said. "We need that out of Tyler." The Chiefs then scored six runs in the bottom half to seize control. Dylan Haynes plated the first two runs with a double to the gap in right-center.

"We started out a little slow," Hailey said. "Dylan's hit was the one that really got us going." Brown reached on a crucial two-out error to keep the inning alive. Green scored on the miscue and the next Berryhill run came when Haynes and Brown executed a double steal of home plate and second base, respectively.

Harper's towering shot over the left-field fence scored the final two runs of the inning.

The Chiefs put another six on the board in the fourth inning. Davidson's two-run shot got the scoring barrage started.

Green and Brown also had run scoring doubles in the frame. The other two runs came home after A. J. Fletcher reached on an error.

BASEBALL NOTEBOOK Jenks junior has a no-hitter: Jenks junior Logan Taylor has been one of the area's top pitchers in the opening month of the season. Taylor is 5-0 after firing a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Memorial on Tuesday.

"I don't know if it was his best game of the season, but he threw well and we made some plays behind him," Jenks coach Jeff Owens said. "He threw some for the varsity last year, but we really didn't have to depend on him because we had Mark Ginther and Dallas Beeler. We expected big things from him this year, but he has exceeded expectations." Taylor, who has not allowed an earned run this year, also fired a shutout during the Best of the West Tournament at Phoenix.

Taylor, a first baseman, is batting near .400 this year, according to Owens.

"He's a good all-around player," Owens said. "He's had some great at-bats and doesn't strike out much. He's really stepped up." Cardinals' Turner shines: East Central senior Josh Turner entered this week batting .595 with 25 hits in 42 at-bats.

"He works hard, always takes extra hitting and never complains," East Central coach Ira Willis said.

Turner, who has 20 RBIs, is versatile as he has seen playing time this season at left field, first base and third base.

With 20 games remaining, he needed only 24 hits to break the Cardinals' season record of 48 set by Mac Grace last year.

East Central (7-8) has 42 stolen bases in 49 attempts.

Moses stays perfect: Broken Arrow's Sam Moses pitched five solid innings in an 11-3 victory over Ponca City on Monday as he improved his record to 3-0.

-- By Barry Lewis, World Sports Writer Track noteBOOK Cards can still fly: East Central moved up to Class 6A, but will compete again for another state championship.

Coach Kevin Gordon's squad won it all in 5A last year and has good relay teams and speed in his nephew David Gordon. David Gordon won three gold medals recently in the University of Tulsa invitational.

Can the Cardinals repeat? "It's kind of early," Kevin Gordon said. "We have a shot and if we can take care of business. Last year, we had depth, we are just as good now, but don't have the depth." East Central lost its lead relay runner in Jamal McDaniel, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the eighth game of the football season. Sophomore Dante Burge took the baton to replace McDaniel and East Central has not missed a step.

Kevin Gordon's girls team will be hard pressed to match last year's talent and state championship.

"I lost two off last year's team ... but we are looking forward to this year," Kevin Gordon said.

"If we can win 6A that would prove a lot." Union could repeat: The defending champion Union Redskins look strong again led by Boyea Lockett. Lockett was state champion in the 100 and 200 last year.

Twins Thomas and James Roberson will be good in many events and should make Union really tough to beat.

"The Roberson twins do so many things well," said former coach Tom Stockton, who now is the Jenks track and field coach.

Jenks has potential: The Trojans will have a good squad, but coach Tom Stockton wishes the weather would cooperate to find out just how good the team really is.

"We've been to only one meet," Stockton said. "We're going to be solid, (but) we're not where Union or Edmond Memorial are right now." Leading the Trojans are Dillon Moon (800 and mile), Brian Alsdorf (400 and 800), Jarrett Lake and Colton Dost (sprinters), Matt Siler (400), Josiah Soap (half mile and mile) and Max Tackett (400 and 200).

-- By John D. Ferguson, World Sports Writer Marvin Escalante scores four goals, highlighting a 7-1 win over the Wolves.

By Rick Harrington World Correspondent A spectacular four-goal performance by East Central forward Marvin Escalante lifted the Cardinals to a 7-1 victory over Shawnee in boys high school soccer on Tuesday night at the East Tulsa Sports Complex.

A crisp shot by Juan Peralta at the 37:43 mark in the first put East Central (5-1) on top 1-0.

Escalante scored the first of his three first-half goals two minutes later and found the goal again at the 4:31 mark on an assist from Antonio Escobedo to increase the Cardinal lead to 3-0.

His hat trick became a reality at 1:26 of the first half when Escalante drilled his third goal into the back of the net to make the score 4-0 at intermission.

East Central sophomore Jacoby Joseph scored at 20:53 of the second half, making the Cardinal advantage 5-0.

Less than a minute later, Shawnee's Justin Parsons scored unassisted to pull the Wolves (4-2) within 5-1.

At 14:57 of the second, Escalante scored his fourth goal of the night and increased the count to 6-1.

Peralta scored his second goal of the night at the 12:47 mark which completed the East Central scoring barrage and fully secured the 7-1 victory.

Led by senior captain Connor Whitham, the Cardinal defense proved to be stifling for Shawnee as the Wolves registered only three shots on goal compared to 19 for East Central.

Whitham signed a letter-of-intent this week to play at Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Shawnee 4, East Central 1 (girls): The Wolves of Shawnee improved their season record to 5-1 with a 4-1 victory over East Central on Tuesday night at the East Tulsa Sports Complex.

Shawnee exploded for four first half goals while holding East Central (4-2) scoreless. Two goals by Jordan Parsons and one each from Sierra Ward and Jennifer Jett provided all the offensive firepower the Lady Wolves needed.

East Central junior midfielder Previona Dixon scored the lone goal for the Cardinals at 15:36 of the second.
