Better traffic management for the Confederation Bridge

OTTAWA, Apr 1, 2009 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) -- The Government of Canada today announced that Straight Crossing Development Ltd, operator of the Confederation Bridge, will be better able to monitor and manage bridge traffic.

Through a contribution of $100,000 from Transport Canada's Intelligent Transportation Systems initiative, Straight Crossing is implementing a video traffic management system to improve bridge safety and traffic monitoring capabilities.

"By investing in this project, our Government is showing its commitment to improving road safety for Canadians," said Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. "This project will further protect travellers on the road while improving the quality of life for the citizens of PEI." Intelligent Transportation Systems assist in better integrating the country's transportation system. They include applications such as advanced systems for traveller information, traffic management, public transport, commercial vehicle operations, emergency response management and vehicle safety.
