New Research Suggests Telehealth Can Reduce Mortality Rates Among Diabetes Patients

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PALO ALTO, CA, March 23 / MARKET WIRE/ -- A new study of veterans using telehealth is the first to indicate that interventions using the technology can result in reduced mortality rates among individuals with chronic disease -- and is yet more evidence of telehealth's ability to improve care and quality of life for these patients, Health Hero Network said.

Research published in the current edition of the Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare showed that mortality rates were significantly reduced among a group of hundreds of diabetes patients who used a telehealth appliance and were supported by registered nurses. Researchers reviewed data on two groups of almost 400 patients over a four year period and reported significantly more deaths in the group that did not have daily telehealth monitoring.

The intervention group that reported fewer deaths used a messaging device in the home that allowed care coordinators to monitor answers from the devices each day so that early interventions could be made before conditions led to a greater medical crisis.

"The results suggest that daily management of patients with diabetes through home monitoring by a registered nurse reduces mortality," the researchers stated in their paper titled "Mortality risk for diabetes patients in a care-coordination, home-telehealth programme suffering from chronic diabetes." Health Hero Network's Health Buddy System has been the premier telehealth platform that the VA has used since it began rolling the technology out nationally in 2005. The latest VA findings follow two other significant developments in telehealth and telemedicine announced earlier this year.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced in January that it is extending and expanding Health Hero Network's Health Buddy Project, designed to show how doctors, nurses, and patients using telehealth technology can improve care and reduce hospitalizations associated with chronic conditions such as heart and lung disease and diabetes.

Also in January, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs published four years of data showing a reduction of 19 percent in hospitalizations and 25 percent in bed days of care among a population of 17,025 veterans enrolled in the VA's Care Coordination and Home Telehealth Program -- which over the study period primarily used Health Hero Network's Health Buddy System.

"There is a growing body of peer-reviewed research building the case that telehealth can have a profound effect on improving care and reducing costs in the US healthcare system, as well as health care systems worldwide," Health Hero CEO Derek Newell said. "This newest study, combined with other recent evidence, suggests that telehealth can help individuals with chronic disease live longer, and at a reduced cost because they receive care that is continuous, timely, and appropriate."
