Train show: Models go high-tech with sound chips
Mar 10, 2009 (The Bakersfield Californian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The model train show at the Kern County Fairgrounds is in its 15th year, and though show chairman Doug Wagner expects the event to lose a few attendees to the economy, he doesn't think the hobby's going away.
Could be that during the recession train lovers will skip pricey vacations to stick closer to home and focus on their hobby, he says.
The Golden Empire Historical & Modeling Society's Annual Model Train Show takes place Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds.
There'll be 120 vendor tables with model train supplies for sale and thousands of square feet of operating model trains on display. And you can enter the opportunity drawing for a model train.
More than 3,000 train enthusiasts attended last year, mostly families, Wagner says.
A big draw is the live steam train offering outdoor rides for $2 a go, courtesy of the Kern County Live Steamers.
Wagner says one of the prominent train technologies in the model train world these days is realistic locomotive sound. Some manufacturers have recorded actual train whistles and used them on sound chips in their models, he added.
