Tekelec Named as Global Leader in Number Portability Market Share

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MORRISVILLE, NC, March 10 / MARKET WIRE/ -- Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), the network signaling, mobile messaging and performance management company, has the leading market share of 35 percent for real-time connection number portability solutions, according to a new report from industry research and consultancy firm Analysys Mason. Tekelec's number portability solution is deployed in carriers serving 750 million subscribers, out of more than two billion global subscribers who had number porting capability in 2008.

Tekelec's EAGLE? 5 signaling platform provides number portability either in a standalone configuration or an integrated configuration also supporting standards-compliant signal transfer point (STP) functions and other signaling-related functions, as well as core network applications such as optimized routing for home location registers (HLRs) and voicemail servers.

"Analysys Mason's market analysis identifies Tekelec's position as the lead provider of number portability solutions," said Mark Main, senior analyst at Analysys Mason. "Our analysis also suggests that Tekelec's strength has been sustained in recent years as carriers make the transition into SIGTRAN, often referred to as SS7 over Internet Protocol (IP)." Number portability requires operators to determine the home network of a called party to terminate calls, deliver messages and initiate other services to ported numbers. Tekelec brings more than a decade of number portability experience, deploying the industry's first integrated number portability solution in 1997 with Bell Atlantic (now Verizon). Today, Tekelec has 79 number portability customers in 28 countries, and most recently delivered number portability solutions to T-Mobile Germany, operators in Romania and several operators in Latin America.

"Customers expect number portability to work as smoothly as voice, text messaging and other mobile services," said Ron de Lange, executive vice president at Tekelec. "Operators derive the most value from integrated signaling and number portability solutions to maximize services' flexibility, scalability and reliability." According to the Number Portability Research Note, since the late 1990s 65 countries have deployed number portability capabilities for fixed-line and/or mobile numbers, and another 24 markets are scheduled to implement number portability by 2012. Number portability was first implemented in Western Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific markets. Analysys Mason predicts that future number portability growth will be driven mainly by emerging markets in Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
