Vietnam to investigate public-private partnership models

Hanoi, Feb 27, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- The Japanese government will work alongside Vietnam to create an environment that fosters the development of Private-Public Partnership (PPP) models, transforming them into effective tools to the sustainable growth of Vietnam , according to a Japanese trade official.

Toru Mihara, an expert from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), said that the Vietnamese government and Japanese companies should work more closely to promote the utilisation of public-private cooperation in their joint infrastructure construction projects.

Mihara was speaking at a seminar in Hanoi on Feb. 27, jointly-hosted byJETRO and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). The seminar highlighted the different forms of PPP to help Vietnamese businesses gain a deeper understanding of PPP and its benefits.

At the seminar, Vietnamese experts described the adoption of PPP models as a way to make the full use of the private sectors capacity and enhance its effectiveness in infrastructure development projects.

They raised the fact that the current lack of fundamental infrastructure has deterred Vietnam s sustainable development and the countrys bid to attract more foreign investment.

According to VCCIs Vice President, Pham Gia Tuc, the Vietnamese public and private sectors have established a series of successful partnership in their implementation of infrastructure, sea port, and road construction projects.

However, he pointed to the need to boost the implementation of policies that stimulate the national economy, alongside the adoption of PPP models.
