Myanmar extends agreement with ILO+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) YANGON, Feb. 27_(Kyodo) _ Military-ruled Myanmar has extended its agreement with the International Labor Organization on dealing with forced labor complaints, a state-run newspaper reported Friday.

The junta and the ILO on Thursday extended the Supplementary Understanding on the treatment of complaints regarding forced labor for another 12 months, the New Light of Myanmar daily reported.

Myanmar Labor Minister Aung Kyi welcomed the signing of the extension, describing it as a "continuation of cooperation" between his government and the ILO, the paper said.

The extension coincided with ILO Executive Director Kari Tapiola's visit to Myanmar's administrative capital Naypyitaw.

The paper also briefly reported about Wednesday's meeting between Aung Kyi and Tapiola at Naypyitaw.

This extension is the second since the junta and the ILO first signed the Supplementary Understanding in February 2007.

The agreement aims to provide a complaint mechanism facilitated by the ILO liaison officer in Yangon to prohibit the use of forced labor in the country, by supporting the application of existing laws.
