SRI is promoted under World Bank project: Minister

New Delhi, Feb 20, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- The government today said that System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which aids in better plant growth, economises the use of seed, irrigation and plant protection and increases productivity, is promoted by under World Bank assisted project.



"The SRI technique is promoted under World Bank assisted project - Irrigated Agriculture Modernised Water Bodies Restoration and Management - in Tamil Nadu," Minister of State for agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The popularisation and promotion of SRI through demonstrations at farmers' field is one of the important intervention of National Food Security Mission, which is operational since October 2007 in 136 districts of 14 states, he said.



During 2007-09 about 912 demonstration at the cost of Rs 36.48 lakhs was organised, Bhuria said.

The minister further said that Rs 122.04 lakh was spent for conducting 2,034 demonstrations.
