Beijing's cell phone possession rate hit 95.4 pct by 2008


BEIJING, Feb 22, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Statistics show that the number of cell phone users in Beijing reached 16.162 million at the end of 2008, and the handset possession rate was 95.4 units per hundred people, 2.5 units fewer than the previous year.



Beijing's permanent population grew 620,00 last year while the net addition of mobile phone user was 179,000 sets, thus result in the decline of cell phone possession rate.

Meanwhile, the local fixed phone subscribers hit 8.848 million. Included were urban users of 6.815 million and rural subscribers of 2.033 million. The main telephone lines per hundred inhabitants were 52.2.


Additionally, the number of netizens in Beijing topped 4.789 million, up 13.5 percent year on year. The text massaging volume through cell phone here increased 11 percent to 33.74 billion pieces.
