Philippine BPO needs IT technical engineersMANILA, Feb 11, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- The Philippines has become a prime destination of international business processing outsourcing sector that is why the government should offer more scholarships in information technology engineering courses. This is according to Dr. John Romagna, president of the Integrated Solutions Technology in the country, who was one of the topnotch speakers on Wednesday's e-Services conference and exhibit at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. "Filipinos are very talented, very flexible and broadminded that's why they are suited for IT employment. They can go into medical, legal and entertainment transcription, animation, web page design, desktop publishing and other computer-related works. "However, I have noticed that the best talents in technical engineering are in demand and are being recruited by foreign employers in Australia, Europe, Japan and the US as fast as they gain experience," he rued. Romagna said he understands and appreciates why Filipino IT engineers are being eyed upon by other countries but he also expressed sadness that we may not have enough of them in the future. "We need to establish and maintain IT businesses here. We have the material but without trained people to handle and program them for continuity and progress, where's the undertaking headed for?," he asked. Romagna suggested that more government scholarships be devoted to four-year college or vocational training similar to what is being implemented by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) that is given more attention to fill the gaps that is now being felt in many BPOs. Romagna said that the Philippines is a choice country in Asia for BPO because of its ensuring the steady supply of English proficient professionals who are being trained for at least 40,000 call center works this year. He insisted that since the country is now a part of the Philippine Investment Priorities Plan, we must expect new incentives for BPO investors and consequently look forward to creating more jobs and generating wealth for Filipinos. Meanwhile, Peter Bendor-Samuel, Chief executive officer of the Everest Group in the country spoke on changing the rules of engagement for IT and BPO global leaders and experts. He said the 9th e-service Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibit set the stage for the convergence and collaboration to tackle the emerging issues and trends in the global IT; connecting with counterparts in the field and its related products and services; and create ideas and solutions to fill the ever-changing need of the global industry.
