Shops not coming to Harlingen after all: Developer says lousy economy killed deals

(Valley Morning Star (Harlingen, TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 11--HARLINGEN -- Four retailers have changed their plans and will not open stores at the Harlingen Corners shopping center.

But the shopping center developer remains confident that other stores will soon open in those spaces.

Jim Gissler, vice president of shopping center developer St. Ives Realty, said Tuesday that Old Navy, cosmetics retailer Ulta, Famous Footwear and Lane Bryant will not open stores as originally planned.

However, Shoe Carnival will replace Famous Footwear at Harlingen Corners, Gissler said.

"The economy killed them," Gissler said of the stores' decisions.

Maurices, Children's Place and Hibbett Sports all plan to open their Harlingen Corners stores in April and May, he said. McAllister's Deli will

also open its restaurant this spring.

Hibbett Sports now has a store at Valle Vista Mall.

The manager there refused any comment on the store's plans to relocate. A call to Hibbett Sports' corporate office was not returned.

Gissler said discussions are continuing with other retailers and businesses to locate at the shopping center and he expects that announcements will be made within weeks.

In addition, Gissler said, his company will attend a convention of shopping center owners and developers in Las Vegas and expects to talk to other businesses about Harlingen Corners.

"With Kohl's, Bed Bath and Beyond and Marshalls, we have three of the best (anchor stores) in the country," he said. "Kohl's has been doing very well there. They're very pleased by the response."

St. Ives Realty is forging ahead with its plan for a 175,000-square-foot second phase of development and is now seeking the anchor stores that will locate there.
