Aperto Networks: Aperto Packetmax Selected By Simbanet For WiMAX Network In Tanzania

Milpitas, CA, Feb 10, 2009 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
Aperto Networks, builder of the world's most versatile carrier-grade and cost-effective WiMAX Forum Certified base stations and subscriber units, today announced that SimbaNET, a leading pan-African service provider, has selected PacketMAX for new WiMAX deployments in Tanzania. The deployment in Tanzania will be the largest WiMAX network in that country.

"Aperto's WiMAX solutions are a perfect fit for the African market," said Brian Deutsch, President and CEO of Aperto and WiMAX Forum Board Member. "Unique attributes such as single CPE supporting 3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz, combined with cost-effective pricing, makes Aperto the WiMAX supplier of choice for operators and enterprises across the continent."

SimbaNET is deploying PacketMAX 5000 base stations and PacketMAX 100 subscriber units in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, before expanding to other regions. The network will operate in the 3.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands and will initially provide high-speed wireless data and voice to corporate and SME customers. Support will also be expanded later for residential and small commercial use.

"We have worked with Aperto in the past and highly value the quality of its WiMAX solutions," said Suhail Sheriff, General Manager of SimbaNET. "We are upgrading older networks to WiMAX and need carrier-grade performance if we are to meet the growing demand for broadband wireless services in Tanzania, Kenya, and elsewhere."

According to a recent report by Business Monitor International (2007), WiMAX subscriber numbers in Africa will grow from 180,000 in 2008 to 11 million by 2012 and will account for 15% of the wireless broadband market. Furthermore, roll out of all wireless mobile technology will result in coverage for over 50% of the continent's population.

"Along with Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Africa will experience an explosion of WiMAX deployments and companies like Aperto are well-positioned to take advantage of that fact," said Berge Ayvazian, Chief Strategy Officer with Yankee Group. "With so many countries with differing spectrum requirements, a company needs to have a broad product offering to succeed globally. Aperto has this."

The PacketMAX family of products delivers the critical elements required to extend wireless broadband services to a wide range of users-ranging from governments, large enterprises and public-sector organizations to multi-tenant buildings and residences-using a single, standards-based platform. Aperto's Fixed WiMAX solution now incorporates support for 5.8 GHz, 5.4 GHz, 5.1 GHz, 3.65 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 3.3 GHz bands. The company's Mobile WiMAX solution also supports 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 3.8 GHz. PacketMAX now offers the widest frequency support in the WiMAX ecosystem globally.
