Nintendo to build new research, development base in Japan

(Kyodo News International (Tokyo) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 10--OSAKA -- Nintendo Co. plans to build new research and development facilities near its head office in Kyoto's Minami Ward to strengthen its R&D operations, company officials said Tuesday.

The new facilities are expected to become a base to develop new game consoles and software, the officials said.

Nintendo expects record-high group sales of 1.82 trillion yen in fiscal 2008 ending March 31 due to strong global sales of Wii and Nintendo DS series game consoles.

Nintendo bought a 40,000-square-meter lot at a cost of about 12.8 billion yen last December as a construction site for the new facilities.

The Kyoto-based company moved its head office to Minami Ward from Higashiyama Ward in 2000 but R&D divisions operate at both sites.

A Nintendo official said the company acquired the construction site but has yet to decide when it will integrate its R&D divisions.
