Publisher moves here from Bellingham

Jan 31, 2009 (The Columbian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A top independent U,S. comic book business has relocated its headquarters to Vancouver.
Bluewater Productions, a partnership of Darren Davis and Jason Schultz, produces young adult books, comic books and graphic novels, long-form stories told in comic book form. The company, established in 2001, is known for its early successful bestsellers, "10th Muse," "VSS" and "The Legend of Isis."

Now, the company is contracting with some 200 artists and writers around the globe to produce five new comic books a month, said Davis, who moved his business here from Bellingham.

"Most of the work is Internet-based," he said.
"We chose to relocate to Vancouver because it's near my father, who lives in Portland, and we've got quick assess to Portland International Airport."

The company is relocating its comic book printing from Canada to B&B print Source, a Portland printer.

Davis started his career in Los Angeles in the marketing end of the entertainment industry, working for Lionsgate. That company produced the Best Picture Oscar awarding-winning movie, "Crash." and also owned D.C. Comics. Davis began working with D.C. Comics and was soon inspired to self-publish his own comic book.

"10th Muse was my first," said Davis, 40.
Now, Bluewater has 50 books in production and at least two optioned for movies, one with Universal and another with Paramount.

Despite the two-person home-based Internet aspect of the business, Davis said Bluewater produces comic books and books primarily in print.

"We expect to work closely with local book stores and comic book stores to distribute our product," he said.

"Vancouver really is a nice combination of what we liked about L.A. and what we liked about Bellingham."
