Bytemobile Gets Patent

Jan 20, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) --
Bytemobile, a provider of mobile internet solutions for network operators, announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued the company a new patent covering key elements of its core technology for the content adaptation and optimization of multimedia for wireless devices.

The new patent is No. 7,444,418 for Bytemobile's "Transcoding Multimedia Information Within a Network Communication System."

Multimedia data is typically encoded at its source at a predetermined transmission rate, regardless of network bandwidth constraints. Consequently, the receiver of this data may be unable to take delivery of it properly, resulting in content disruption or degraded application performance. Bytemobile's new patent covers the essential processes behind the decoding of multimedia data and its recoding at a transmission rate appropriate to support the corresponding application. Transparent to the user, the technology enables an improved mobile internet experience while reducing data traffic on the network. This patent includes 50 claims related to these processes.

"Considering that internet video on wireless devices is expected to account for nearly 90 percent of all data traffic by the year 2012, multimedia adaptation and optimization have become critical solutions for network operators," said Constantine Polychronopoulos, Ph.D., the company's founder and chief technology officer. "The new patent expands an already strong intellectual portfolio and demonstrates Bytemobile's continued leadership in providing network operators with solutions that are essential to their sustained growth and profitability."

The patented multimedia transcoding technology is a core component of Bytemobile's Web Fidelity Suite and Media Fidelity Suite, which support media adaptation and media optimization applications. These products intercept media streams from off-portal content to wireless users and transparently transcode the data to minimize video stalling and re-buffering. Enabling the delivery of a more consistent media stream, Bytemobile solutions help operators deliver a mobile internet experience across a wide range of devices, from feature phones to smartphones to laptops. By reducing the bandwidth required for the media stream, these solutions minimize unnecessary data traffic which results in overall network capacity and performance improvements.
